CSMCís main research goal is to understand how societies have shaped material manifestations of writing and how, conversely, material manifestations of writing have affected societies. For this aim, the CSMC creates a multidisciplinary environment aiming at understanding written artefacts as objects having multiple dimensions including their digital representations, materiality, textual content and historical context.
The Centreís computer scientists apply and/or develop machine learning methods and artificial intelligence algorithms in order to analyse written artefacts, including images (pattern recognition via Computer Vision), texts (Natural Language Processing), 3D data (3D image processing) as well as spectroscopic, spectrometric and sequence-based data (Bioinformatics/Chemometrics). Annual relevant scientific events are organized to facilitate collaboration between different disciplines and motivate the development of novel AI approaches for researching written artefacts with the aim of better understanding them.
