INSTITUTIONS

The GIGA is an independent social science research institute based in Hamburg, Germany. We analyse political, social, and economic developments in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East, as well as global issues. The overarching themes are accountability and participation, peace and security, globalisation and development, and global orders and foreign policies. Our research combines in-depth area expertise and cutting-edge comparative methods. 
The GIGA stands for research that is global in content, reach, and structure. As a member of the Leibniz Association, we are committed to the Leibniz principle of ìtheoria cum praxiî: science for the benefit of society. On the basis of our research, we actively engage with academic, political, and societal stakeholders in Germany, at the European and international levels, and in the regions of the Global South. Research-based policy exchange and knowledge transfer are essential elements of our mandate. Our Information Centre fosters a unique and rich library collection on Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and global issues.
